Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Understanding ADHD
What is ADHD?
ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It’s characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development.
There are three main types of ADHD:
• Inattentive Type: Difficulty focusing, following instructions, or organizing tasks.
• Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Excessive movement, fidgeting, interrupting, or acting without thinking.
• Combined Type: A mix of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
ADHD is not caused by laziness or a lack of intelligence. It’s a medical condition with biological and genetic components, and with the right support, individuals with ADHD can thrive in all areas of life.

Signs and Symptoms
ADHD symptoms can vary by age and individual, but common signs include:
• Difficulty concentrating or staying focused
• Forgetfulness in daily activities
• Trouble following through on tasks
• Impulsive decisions or interruptions
• Fidgeting, restlessness, or excessive talking
Children may show symptoms differently than adults, and ADHD often coexists with conditions like anxiety, depression, or learning disabilities.

Diagnosis and Treatment
ADHD is typically diagnosed by a healthcare provider, often involving psychological evaluations, interviews, and behavior assessments.
Treatment options include:
• Behavioral therapy: Especially effective for children and parents
• Medication: Such as stimulants and non-stimulants to manage symptoms
• Lifestyle strategies: Time management, organization tools, coaching, and mindfulness techniques
Treatment is not one-size-fits-all; it often involves a combination of approaches tailored to the individual’s needs.
